Photography and Imaging

The Department of Photography and Imaging at Tisch offers a curriculum centered on the making and understanding of images. Students explore photo-based imagery as personal and cultural expression. The department embraces multiple perspectives with students working in virtually all modes of analog and digital photo-based and multimedia image making.

The Spring at Tisch Photography and Imaging program is open to students in their sophomore and junior years. Students must have taken at least two semesters of college-level foundation courses, including Photography I and Photography II. Students must also submit a portfolio with their application.

Studio Courses  4 points


Students enroll in one of the following studio courses: Large Format, Lighting, Web Design, Photography and Performance, Photo-journalism, Advanced Documentary Strategies, or Directed Projects.

History  4 points


The Aesthetic History of Photography, which chronicles the history of photography’s complex and symbiotic relationship to the arts: painting, sculpture, architecture, installation, and performance,among others.

Elective Credits  6-8 points


On acceptance to the program, students are sent a directory of courses available during the spring semester.
