Dramatic Writing

The curriculum in the Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing enables students to analyze dramatic text as it has developed since the time of the ancient Greeks, learn the rudiments of production techniques, explore the world of performance, and develop and refine their writing ability.

Playwriting: From Page to Stage  6 points

The core course of the program in dramatic writing is Playwriting: From Page to Stage, a 6-point class that introduces the fundamentals of playwriting and provides various means of practicing and exploring them through the completion of a polished 10-minute play. Throughout the semester, students write, revise, and present scenes and monologues; collaborate with their classmates as well as with professional directors and actors; explore design, direction, and performance; read and analyze plays; go to New York theatre; and ultimately produce and present readings of their own 10-minute plays. The Staged Reading Performance takes place during a two-day marathon. All students are required to participate in this final event in some capacity other than as a writer (for example, as director, actor, or stage manager). A noted guest playwright will attend the performances and deliver critiques.

Elective Credits  6-12 points

On acceptance to the program, students are sent a directory of courses available during the spring semester.
