Directed Research Topics: Seminar on Cuban Arts

Students also enroll in Cuban Art History or History of Documentary in Cuba (listed below) and two companion courses to complete an 18-point program. Students must list at least two proposed research topics as part of their study abroad application.

This course welcomes students from various academic and arts backgrounds and is designed as an advanced interdisciplinary research seminar and tutorial extension of the Arts and Culture of Cuba course. Students in this course are expected to propose a specific research topic based on the role of the performing, media, dramatic, and/or visual arts in various cultural and political transitions. Each student is assigned a mentor who will recommend reading materials as well as various ideas for primary research opportunities and resources. Throughout the semester, students have the opportunity to work on their project; participate in discussions and seminars with leading Cuban artists, writers, and intellectuals; as well as attend lectures, performances, and exhibitions. Ultimately, students are expected to write a research paper on their topic. Students must list at least two proposed research topics as part of their study abroad application.

Cuban Art History

This course explores three areas of Cuban art history, including: architecture, photography and visual art.

Through a series of lectures and city tours, students examine Havana’s architecture dating back to the 16th century. City planning and expansion until 1950 is studied,  and particular emphasis is placed on the evolution of architecture and city planning following the revolution.

Documentary, conceptual, and contemporary photography also is studied, and the country’s leading photographers present lectures and lead discussions with students.

The final series of lectures surround visual arts in Cuba following the revolution, including design, cinema and imagery.


History of Documentary Film in Cuba

Students examine the history of ICAIC and its role in the development of national Cuban cinema, Latin American documentary filmmaking, and the careers of filmmakers such as Santiago Álvarez, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, Fernando Pérez, and Humberto Solás.
