Poetics of Witnessing
Biography
Peter Lucas teaches in the Department of Photography and Imaging and Open Arts. His teaching focuses on international human rights with an emphasis on media, documentary practice, photography, the poetics of witnessing, human rights education, and youth media. He is currently finishing a book entitled: Viva Favela: Photojournalism, Visual Inclusion, and Human Rights in Brazil. He recently co-authored a web portal in collaboration with Magnum Photos and the U.N. Cyberschoolbus on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Education: http://cyberschoolbus.un.org/dnp. As a photographer and film maker, Peter Lucas focuses on personal photography, found images, and experimental film. His current projects include Arpoador: Sunday Evenings In Rio de Janeiro, a portfolio of original photos documenting the outcropping of rocks between the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. He is also the co-author of The Last Hour of Summer: The Lost Photographs of Ipanema forthcoming on Desiderta Press. He is currently directing a documentary film: Snapshots of Lapa about the last café photographer in Rio.
