The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute is one of the best known and respected professional acting studios in the country. It teaches Lee Strasberg’s “method,” perhaps the most famous acting technique in the world. Based on the early discoveries of Stanislavsky and the teachings of Boleslavsky, the method focuses on the connection between the actor’s personal experiences and emotions (called “sense memory”) and the experiences and emotions of the character. As in all art forms, it is this personal spark that turns a skilled technician into a true artist. Performance classes are taught by professional instructors at the institute who are selected for their comprehensive understanding of Strasberg’s work and for their ability to apply it to the needs of the individual actor.
Instruction is provided in acting, television/film, speech, and movement. In the acting classes, students learn exercises that make the method technique possible, such as relaxation, concentration, and sense-memory training, as well as work on scenes and monologues. In television/film classes, students are introduced to special techniques designed for work in front of and behind the camera. Speech training helps develop an individual’s natural voice by increasing physical skills such as breathing, resonance, pitch, range, volume, and articulation, while movement classes focus on building strength, flexibility, and locating and reducing tension. Students also work on developing a character’s physical aspects and on the physical expression of mood and emotion.
