The Summer High School Program in Dramatic Writing, offered by the Rita and Burton Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing at Tisch School of the Arts, gives students a taste of what it means to study and write drama, as well as an idea of what life as a dramatic writer is like. Students follow the same rigorous basic training as undergraduates: they must take courses in the basics of both screenwriting and playwriting. The combination of these two courses provides students with an exciting introduction to the world of dramatized storytelling.
Students learn the fundamentals of dramatic structure in lecture and discussion sessions on playwriting and screenwriting, develop scripts in each medium in the writing workshop sessions, and present their playwriting work in the department’s Rita and Burton Goldberg Theatre.
The Rita and Burton Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing offers a highly focused academic and professional writing program for undergraduate and graduate students who have the talent and the will to write for theatre, film, and television. Students in the program are expected to experiment as they find their own voices. To become a dramatist, a student must understand and experience every aspect of the dramatic arts. Therefore, students in the dramatic writing program get hands-on experience in theatre arts and also shoot and edit video in film arts classes. The department has an entirely professional faculty of working writers, scholars, and production artists.
