This summer program for high school students provides an intensive introduction to the art of writing for the musical theatre, drawing on the techniques used in our master's degree program. Students interested in writing and composing for musical theatre participate in a team-taught workshop in the art and craft of collaboration.
The workshop offers study in theatre songwriting and the principles of playwriting (bookwriting) for the musical theatre, stressing plot, character, and action. Students work in rotating teams on a series of projects, culminating in a 10-minute musical. The program is anchored by a series of seminars on past and current works of the American musical theatre that examine the evolution of the art form. Participants also attend theatrical performances, watch films and tapes of major productions, and participate in discussions with industry professionals and Tisch faculty.
Students interested in applying as composers should either be able to write their music down, produce it by computer, or present it on an instrument (guitar, piano, etc.). Those interested in applying as writers should have a prior interest in an area of creative writing such as playwriting, musical theatre bookwriting, short story writing, nonfiction writing, or poetry.
NOTE: PROGRAM WILL NOT BE OFFERED SUMMER 2005.
