Program dates to be announced.
The Experimental Theatre Wing of the Department of Drama, Undergraduate, conducts the International Theatre Workshop (ITW) in Amsterdam. This seven-week intensive program is designed for serious acting students who seek to deepen their existing technique and be exposed to a wide range of approaches to live performance and the creation of original work. ITW students will be working in three studios in the newly renovated Theater Techniques Building of the Amsterdam School of the Arts.
Participants receive training in scene study (contemporary or classical), physically based acting (Viewpoints and early Grotowski), action-based script analysis, postmodern dance (technique, improvisation, and choreography), commedia, clowning, mask work, self-scripting and image-based original theatre, narrative acting (Brecht), street theatre, extended voice work (Roy Hart), and Shakespeare. The creation and showing of original work are integral to the program.
An accomplished faculty of international theatre artists including master teachers from the Experimental Theatre Wing and European companies and conservatories teach classes. Regular faculty include Kevin Kuhlke (founder and director of ITW), Steve Wangh (author of Acrobat of the Heart), Paul Langland (Meredith Monk’s The House), Mary Bitel (founder of Girlspace), Richard Armstrong (founding member of the Roy Hart Theater), Andrew Wade (head of voice, Royal Shakespeare Company), Paul Binnerts (Dutch director and playwright), Saskia Hegt (Manhattan Theater Project), Karelmaria DeBoeck (lead mask/acting teacher, Utrecht Conservatory), and Katie Duck (founder of Magpie Dance Company). Further instruction by visiting guest artists has included master classes with Bill Irwin, Kristin Linklater, Mary Overlie (originator of the Viewpoints), Miriam Goldschmidt and Bruce Myers (both from Peter Brook’s International Company), Chris Bayes (Clowning), Annie Piper (Yoga), Franc Bruyere (lalala Human Steps), and Erhardt Stiefel (Théâtre du Soleil).
There are a number of summer festivals in Amsterdam in contemporary dance, jazz, and theatre, including the acclaimed Holland festival, for which students may be able to purchase group discounted tickets. ITW students may attend performances of the International Theatre School Festival for the nominal charge of approximately $5 per show. Students may also participate in two cultural field trips involving performances and touring the city.
Students live and attend all classes in the center of Amsterdam, with easy access to concert halls, theatres, and museums. Students are placed in studio apartments managed by the Amsterdam School of the Arts. Each student has his/her own room in either a studio or a suite apartment, which is fully furnished and includes a kitchenette and bath. Amsterdam is a truly cosmopolitan city where English-speaking visitors have no difficulty communicating.
